SHY 70: A medical and nutrition volunteer project in Fiji
Wednesday Jul 04, 2018
Wednesday Jul 04, 2018
If you’ve been following me for a while on social media, you may have noticed that I take off to Fiji 4 times a year to work on a nutrition project. You see, when I’m not sorting out women with adrenal fatigue and pyrrole disorder in my clinic and through my online program, I moonlight at the Fiji Nutrition Coordinator for Involvement Volunteers International (also known as IVI). IVI are a charity organisation based on the Gold Coast, sending volunteers to communities all round the world, including the Pacific Islands, Bali, Philippines, Greece, India and Nepal. In this episode, follow me to Fiji where we conduct over 800 health checks on local resort workers, villages, and communities in need. Fiji has just been named the top country in the world for Type 2 diabetes, an honour that no one ever wants to receive. So there’s lots of work to do to help these people become healthier! Along with Involvement Volunteers International (IVI), I’ve been heading up a team of nutritionists, naturopaths, dieticians, nurses and other allied health professionals, to do health checks and education for as many people as possible. In this episode, you will hear: What it’s like to be a volunteer What it’s like to live in the REAL Fiji (as opposed to the resorts) What the locals eat – both traditional Fijian food (yum!) and also the junk that’s available What we are doing to help How we are hoping to have an impact And how you can help! How to get involved: If you’re a nurse, a nutritionist, dietician, doctor, naturopath, midwife, physio, OT, chiropracter, osteopath, or any other allied health practitioner, then get in touch. We also take students, as long as they have their basic first aid. So it’s an amazing opportunity to gain experience in the field before you even graduate. Head to volunteering.org.au or just drop me a line at hello@julesgalloway.com and I’ll point you in the right direction to get started. NEW… Adrenal Health Check Quiz! SHY 69: Amy Mingin – Natural Contraception
Wednesday Jun 13, 2018
Wednesday Jun 13, 2018
In a rather hilarious coincidence, today’s topic is the perfect segue after talking about sex for the last three episodes. You see, we are going to be talking about natural contraception. All too often I have patients come to me, super confused as to which method of contraception to choose. The Pill has been linked to blood clots, stroke, high blood pressure and even some cancers. IUDs are invasive and hard to remove, and they either secrete copper or hormones, and barrier methods… well… let’s face it, they’re kinda annoying. But what if I told you that you have other options? My special guest is here to help us navigate that. Meet Amy Mingin – a naturopath based on the Gold Coast with a special interest in women’s hormonal health. She even runs workshops on natural contraception. In order to provide a balanced look at this topic, we look at the pros and cons of the most common contraceptives, including the pill, IUDs, Implanon, barrier methods and more. You will learn what side effects to look for, and the effectiveness of each. Did you know… That the pill can change your microbiome? How about the effect of the pill and IUDs on weight gain? Or the changes in moods that might happen with contraceptive implants? So… if you’re looking for an alternative, listen up… Amy takes us through a natural system of contraception, which, when done properly, can be very effective (Amy says that even just taking your basal temperature properly has been said to be over 99% effective). Yes, it takes a little bit of extra tracking and planning, but it CAN be done. Amy will take you through the process that she teaches, including charting your cycle, taking your basal temperature and chow to check your vaginal mucous (yep – we’re going there!). And the bonus? It can not only be used as contraception, but when you’re ready, it’s also super useful in achieving conception. So tune in, even if you’re planning to have a baby soon! “Put the apps down.” Amy can teach you how to chart your cycle on a “good old piece of paper” and will give you the first simple steps that you need to get started. She also has awesome advice on how to come off the pill without experiencing so many side effects. She also has some hot tips on how to navigate all this stuff if you’re a mum chatting to your teenage daughter about choices of contraception. Want to connect with Amy? Visit her website here. Connect with her on Facebook here. And browse her Instagram page here. This episode comes with a friendly warning. This podcast covers some rather adult content (so you might not want to play it out loud with your kids in the car!). Welcome to the 2nd episode in what has been jokingly labelled my 3 part Vag series. That’s right, we will be discussing all things sexual health – you will find out what’s normal, what’s not normal, and how to improve the health of your lady parts… and in this case, your sex life. Meet sexologist Isiah McKimmie. She believes in a world of meaningful connection, powerful intimacy and loving sex (sounds awesome, am I right?). If you feel disconnected from your partner or struggle with recurring arguments… If you find yourself replaying the same patterns in relationships… Or… If you wish you could feel more confident with sex… Then this episode is for YOU. Whether you’re single, or in a relationship, there will be plenty of “aha” moments! “A lot of us still have that shame that sits with us about sex.” Listen to her story of transformation from shy, awkward teenager to card-carrying sex therapist, and how she arrived at a place where she could feel more confident in her skin and enjoy her body. “It’s actually really normal for there to be different desire levels for sex in a relationship.” Find out what to do if your partner wants more sex… and you’re too exhausted to say yes. Or what to do if you’re feeling up for it… but you’re not getting the kind of attention and desire that you want from your partner. “A partner’s desire for sex is actually a desire for connection and intimacy.” Find out how to reignite the spark and reconnect with your loved one. Find out how to “get back on the horse” if you haven’t had sex for a reaaaaaally long time. (It can be super awkward and weird, but it doesn’t have to be!) Learn the step by step formula to rebuilding your sex life (and your relationship…yay!). Discover how to check in with your own needs and desires, so that you can communicate better with your partner. Because sometimes our needs change over time, and we don’t even realise at first. If you’re single, find out Isiah’s tips for attracting a partner that will be the right person for us, and how to stop repeating old patterns when it comes to the lovers we’re drawn to. And we also chat about body image, and what it means to feel happy in your body (and sexy!) as you age and as your body changes. “Once you’re naked, your partner’s just really grateful.” Hahaha! SHY 66: Moira Bradfield – How to have a healthy vagina
Wednesday May 02, 2018
Wednesday May 02, 2018
All too often, we’re soooo busy dealing with things like poor energy levels, crappy immune systems, dodgy thyroids and worn out adrenals, that we neglect a very important part of our health… and that’s our sexual health, and the wellness of our lady parts “down there.” But this week we’re going to change all that. Welcome to the first in a 3 part holistic sexual health series. Yep, for the next 3 episodes, we will be tackling the taboo topics that you’ve been dying to know about, but were too embarrassed to ask. So just a heads up: We’ll be talking about some rather adult themes, so maybe don’t play these episodes out loud with little kids in the car ? Meet Moira Bradfield. She’s a naturopath specialising in vaginas. Yep, for real. She actually working towards her PhD on the topic of the vaginal microbiome (that’s the balance of good and bad bacteria). Yep – one day soon she’ll actually be a “doctor of the vag.” Moira is the perfect person to cover this topic with, as she has no problem speaking frankly and openly – yep, we don’t hold back – and I make sure I ask ALL the embarrassing questions to that you don’t have to! We’re not talking about this topic enough – which means that women are suffering needlessly from ailments that are often easily dealt with. Some of us don’t even know what’s normal and not normal down there, let alone how to fix it! “I think there has been an explosion of liberation, but en masse there’s still a taboo… and the media can affect that and perpetuate that as well.” So it’s time to BE the change that we’d like to see in women’s health! In this episode, you’ll learn about: • Discharges – what’s normal and what’s not • Thrush – what to do if the regular pharmacy (or natural) treatments don’t fix it • Natural and “home” remedies for thrush – what works and what doesn’t (and how to use them safely) • How to tell if you have a bacterial infection • How it’s meant to smell “down there” and what an odd smell might indicate (I told you – we’re leaving no stone unturned!) • What to ask for at the GP in order to get properly diagnosed • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) • How to protect your vaginal health if you’ve taken antibiotics • How to keep your lady parts clean without disrupting the delicate balance of pH and bacteria • Douches – yes or no? • Best and worst lubricants to use (you might be surprised about how complex this one is!) • And… is activewear bad for your vag? • If you want to connect with Moira, here’s where to find her: Moira’s Website: http://intimateecology.com.au The Intimate Ecology Facebook Page is here. SHY 64: Kym Campbell – On PCOS, infertility and the natural way to balance hormones
Wednesday Apr 04, 2018
Wednesday Apr 04, 2018
Meet Kym Campbell. She has a personal story to share that (unfortunately) is bound to resonate with many women. You see, she dearly wanted to have children, but struggled for years with infertility. She was eventually diagnosed with a condition called PCOS (which stands for polycystic ovarian syndrome), which makes it very difficult for women to fall pregnant. After modern medicine couldn’t provide a cure, she embarked on a mission to do whatever she could to become healthier, naturally – and the biggest change she made was to her diet, with stunning results. “It was a huge pivot in my life.” She now helps other women with infertility to walk the same path back to health. In this episode we chat about: • What PCOS is, and why we develop it • The symptoms to look out for if you suspect you have PCOS • Why you need to address PCOS, even if you’re not planning to have a baby • “Lean PCOS” and why you don’t need to gain weight in order to have this disorder • Conventional medicine, IVF, and why the standard PCOS treatments don’t always work • Which foods you should definitely avoid in PCOS (hello, sugar – you’re enemy number 1!) • How functional medicine can help with women’s hormonal issues • Other changes besides diet, that helped Kym to heal her body once and for all We also chat about why so many women with PCOS don’t even know they have it (and how to get formally diagnosed). “I went to a lot of doctors before I was even given a diagnosis.” We also talk you through the dietary tweaks that needed to happen in order for Kym to beat PCOS (and how to stop feeling overwhelmed if you’re going through it too!). “It really is possible, no matter where you come from, no matter what your starting point is.” If you battle with hormonal issues, irregular periods, excess belly fat, blood sugar issues, weight gain, low energy levels, or if you’re struggling to get pregnant, this episode is a MUST. Want to connect with Kym? SHY 63: Dr Terry Wahls – The Wahls Protocol for Autoimmune Diseases
Wednesday Mar 21, 2018
Wednesday Mar 21, 2018
Sometimes I still pinch myself that I get to chat with the people that I really look up to in the industry, and better still, that I get to call it work. This interview has to be one of my all time favourites, so I hope you enjoy it too. Meet Dr Terry Wahls. In 2000 she was diagnosed with MS, after a period in her life when she was super busy. By 2007 her condition had deteriorated to the point where she was unable to sit up on her own, she needed a wheelchair to move around, and she was suffering from intense brain fog. The prognosis was bleak and even the best that conventional medicine had to offer did not give her the relief she needed. So she started researching, looking for answers outside the box. Even though she was a trained medical practitioner, she was desperate and willing to try just about anything. After embarking upon a paleo diet that was specifically modified to maximise the nutrients needed to fight autoimmune disease, a miracle happened. Her illness started to reverse. Dr Wahls was told that any functions lost were gone forever – she proved them wrong! Slowly, she regained the use of her legs, she threw away the wheelchair, her energy levels improved, and she could even ride her bike for 20 miles at a time! And so The Wahls Protocol was born – a highly respected and best-selling guide to healing your body from autoimmune disease. “Stress is vital for life… but so is relaxation.” We talk about the role that cortisol (a stress hormone) plays in the development of autoimmune and degenerative diseases. We talk about the other causes of immune dysregulation, and the various warning signs to watch out for along the way. We also reveal the signs and symptoms of inflammation, and how to bring the inflammatory fire in your body back down. “I love the paleo diet… but it wasn’t sufficient to heal me.” We also have a looooong chat about the food. Is gluten ok for some people to eat? Should we ALL be avoiding it? What about paleo and ketogenic diets – are they the answer for everyone? Listen in to find out the answers. “Once gluten has become a problem, there’s no undoing that.” Eek! What about genetics? We talk about the new types of gene testing available and their role in determining what we should and shouldn’t eat. We also talk about whether you need to eat meat in order to heal, or whether it’s possible to recover using a vegetarian or vegan diet. Given that Dr Wahls was a vegetarian for 20 years prior to going paleo, and has done a LOT of research in this area, she has some honest and very thought provoking answers here! We also chat about why food needs to be your leading source of medicine, rather than supplements. “It’s way simpler and safer to get my nutrition from food, than it is to get my nutrition from supplements.” Want to see more of Dr Wahls? Her epic TEDx Talk is here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLjgBLwH3Wc Her website is here:https://terrywahls.com Are you in Sydney or Melbourne? Dr Wahls is speaking in April and May. You can grab tickets to her live events here:https://drterrywahlslive.com/ Not in Sydney or Melbourne? There are online access passes available at the above link too. Liked this podcast? SHY 60: Scott Gooding – Making real food simple, fun, sexy and affordable
Wednesday Feb 07, 2018
Wednesday Feb 07, 2018
Sometimes an interview comes along that’s so free-flowing and fun that we run overtime… and I don’t want to interrupt to person to say “stop.” This is one of those interviews. Meet Scott Gooding – a passionate real food cook, former MKR finalist… and all round awesome bloke. Scott’s superpower is making healthy food simple, fun, sexy, affordable… and downright delicious. He’s brought out recipe books, taught countless cooking classes and is often found on stage and in the media, inspiring people everywhere to get into the kitchen and give it a go. In this episode, we ponder the question: “We all know we should eat real food, but why is it that we don’t?” Listen as we chat about: – Un-learning old behaviour patterns around food. – Why mindset is super important when it comes to healthy eating. – How to overcome barriers in order to live a healthier life. – How to turn the kitchen from a place of dread into somewhere fun and exciting. – Simple, easy hacks to make cooking at home a breeze. “If you start cooking at home… then you know exactly what’s in your food, what’s in your daughter/son/partner’s food, and then you can start to optimise health. But you can only do that if you’re excited about cooking.” We also get into a bit of food philosophy: “There’s definitely a time when I was flying the paleo flag.” Scott talks about his time as a hard-core paleo follower, and why he’s softened his message these days to be less dogmatic (that’s right, folks – he now eats grains, legumes and potatoes – shock horror!). “When you strip is all back, my message hasn’t changed, but my delivery has.” We also chat about the misguided notion that exercise is the solution to weight management. “I go to the gym to feel good, not to keep my weight in check.” And we talk about the ritual of family night (spoiler alert, it doesn’t have to involve your actual family!), and why it’s important to share food. “I think it’s in our DNA, at a really primal level, to share food together.” Grab a cuppa, sit back, and let Scott take you on a journey to a place where cooking is fun again. Liked this podcast? SHY 59: Bella Zanesco – Coming back from corporate burnout
Wednesday Jan 24, 2018
Wednesday Jan 24, 2018
Meet Bella Zanesco – a life and wellbeing strategist. She helps professionals plan for and bring their A-game to their life, career and relationships. She’s also world champion sailor and kiteboarder. In her previous corporate life she delivered over $5billion in new revenues to Fortune 500 companies including Pepsi Co, Sainsbury’s, Reed Elsevier, Unilever, and The Royal Mail. Despite all these successes Bella hit a massive hurdle when she succumbed to adrenal failure and burnout. “I ended up in the foetal position in my mother’s arms.” It was this rock bottom time that prompted Bella to sit up an re-evaluate her whole life. “I had quite a severe bout of depression, and literally my daily goals were making a green smoothie, making the bed, and going for a walk.” After nursing her body (and mind!) back to health, she dug deep to find out why things went so wrong. She identified “a cluster of screwups” that had happened in her work, relationships and in her physical and mental self care. And she became curious about how other women around the world were faring as they juggled career, relationships, health and their financial goals. So she created a worldwide survey that turned into a global wellbeing report on women and happiness (high achiever, much?). Her research uncovered some mind blowing stats: – Only 15% of women aged 19-49 said they were happy. – 50% had a mental health issue related to their work. – 71% felt they didn’t have the energy to do what they wanted to do. Her book ‘Smart Girls Screw Up Too – The no-nonsense guide to creating the life you want’ has just been released and incorporates this research of 2,000 women, details her own experiences and provides a platform for working women to come back to themselves and figure out what’s most important. Find out why Bella thinks women have become detached from our true biological nature. “When we are in our true feminine state, we are procreators, we are nurturers, we are collaborators, we are carers, we have the ability to support and nurture generations.” Discover why we need to channel our “needy bitch” and learn to say “no” more often to protect our energy and live a life that’s authentic and fully expressed. “Your CV is not your eulogy.” What do YOU want to be remembered for? At the end of your days, will you wish you stressed more, worked more, played more, or loved more? If you feel trapped on a hamster wheel or in a lifestyle that feels constantly out of control, or if you feel like you’ve lost your true self somewhere along the way, tune in – this podcast is for YOU. This interview isn’t about inspiration, it’s about ACTION. “Happiness definitely can be a choice, but it’s one of those things where you have to continually work at it.” This is one of my most favourite interviews ever – so I hope you enjoy it!
