SHY 58: Ask the Naturopath
Wednesday Jan 10, 2018
Wednesday Jan 10, 2018
Hello and welcome to a fresh new year! For this week’s episode, I’ve decided to revive an old segment called “Ask the Naturopath.” It’s a part of the show where I answer your most burning health questions. I love this segment because I get to find out what’s really going on with you, what makes you, the listener, tick, and it tells me what information you really want me to talk about. In this episode we talk about how to increase your calcium levels naturally (especially if you can’t have dairy), how to get rid of a pesky parasite called Blastocystis hominis (aka “blasto”), and we also chat about all things detoxing, and how to do a healthy liver cleanse (it may not be as complicated as you think!). If you have a question for a future episode, please email me at hello@julegalloway.com or hit me up via my Facebook page, because I will definitely be doing more of these in 2018. Meet Katherine Maslen – fellow naturopath, nutritionist, author, speaker… and a bit of a renegade when it comes to the health scene. She’s been featured on the Today show on Channel 9, ABC radio, Wellbeing, Good Health and Marie Claire magazines. She still works in clinical practice, but these days she’s also on a mission to change the way that people think about health, through speaking engagements, media appearances and her blog. I’ve brought her on the show because she’s known around the naturopathic traps as one THE go-to practitioners. She’s also caused a wee bit of controversy in recent times. We chat about the benefits and the dangers of getting your health info from Google, Facebook or health forums. We also shoot the breeze about the rise in popularity of functional testing in practice, and the pros and cons of latest types of blood testing and hormone testing, especially in fertility and female repro cases. Katherine also reveals her love for herbal medicine and why there’s so much magic in using herbs in a traditional way. She also is a huge advocate of self-care as a key to healing – and her definition is so simple that you’ll wonder why you hadn’t thought of it before! She also broke the internet recently (true story – she had so much traffic it crashed her website!) after she wrote a VERY controversial blog post on the dangers of taking essential oils. It began after she saw a very popular brand of essential oil being used in a pancake recipe for children. So I pick her brain about this too… and she doesn’t hold back! (Oh – and don’t even get her started on those MLM supplements and weight loss shakes!) My favourite quotes from this episode include: “Sometimes you just need someone to kick your ass (and) tell you what’s going on.” “(Dr Google) doesn’t take into account people’s individual makeups.” “I haven’t been stirring the pot – I’ve just been correcting some misinformation that’s been out there recently.” “I actually use essential oils in my practice…as part of a bacteria-killing regime, but we’re never using them daily, ever, and we’re always considering – what are the other effects on the microbiome?” Liked what you heard? Here’s where to find Katherine: Website: https://katherinemaslen.com/ Her clinic is at http://brisbanenaturalhealth.com.au Social Media Links: Facebook: http://facebook.com/katherinemaslennaturopath Insta: http://instagram.com/katherinemaslen Her awesome health challenge is here: http://10dayhealthchallenge.com.au And of course… Katherine’s post on essential oils is here. Do you live in Melbourne? I’m coming your way on the 11th of February for a 1-Day Wellness-Fest of self-discovery, self-care & rock-solid strategies to get your health back on track. • Learn the tools you need to prevent and address chronic and degenerative illness. • Create space in your life for healing to begin. • Get to the REAL reasons for why you’ve become sick and tired. • Experience that gentle kick-up-the-butt that only Jules and her team can bring! • We will share strategies to address adrenal fatigue, chronic illness, autoimmunity and other women’s health issues, with loads of “aha moments.” Keen? SHY 56: I’m Baaaaaaaack!
Wednesday Dec 13, 2017
Wednesday Dec 13, 2017
Well, helloooooo! It’s been a while since we’ve chatted, huh? First of all, I must apologise for the extended hiatus. I was only planning to take 2-3 months off from podcasting, just for the winter, and it turned into 6 months. In that time I created and launched a brand new 12 week program called the Adrenal Fatigue Breakthrough – that was pretty awesome. I’ve also been super busy in the clinic, mostly with Skype consultations. But something else happened in the last 6 months that took up a fair bit of my time and energy! Listen to this episode and I’ll fill you in on: • My new role organising medical and nutrition volunteer trips to Fiji. • The communities that we worked in on both Fiji’s main island and on a couple of remote islands. • The challenges in preventing heart disease and diabetes in Fiji. • And what you can do to help right now! As promised, here are the links mentioned in the episode: Our crowdfunding page is here, or head to http://julesgalloway.com. Click here to read Jess’ blog post about her time in Fiji. You can read more about Involvement Volunteers International here. The post SHY 56: I’m Baaaaaaaack! appeared first on The Wellness Couch.

You see, when Amanda was in her 20’s, she was diagnosed with MS, and autoimmune condition that many would consider to be a life sentence. From hardcore steroids and months spent in rehab in hospital, to finally being able to wriggle her toes, and then learning to walk again, Amanda’s road to recovery looks like a long and arduous uphill struggle. Wednesday May 17, 2017
Wednesday May 17, 2017
Mindfulness… We all know we should do it, but how many of us actually consciously practice it every day? All too often we can get caught up in our daily tasks and struggles, and forget to take the time to bring awareness to simple actions that can create balance and relaxation. Enter Rachael Kable. Her podcast, The Mindful Kind, is consistently at the top of the iTunes charts, and with good reason – the short, bite-sized episodes are full of actionable take-aways, delivered in a gentle, calming way. In this episode, we pick Rachael’s brain about: How to kick off a mindfulness practice Why the mind wanders, and how to bring it back How to weave mindfulness into everything you do Why, when done correctly, mindfulness doesn’t feel like a chore How to remind yourself to practice mindfulness How to cope with stressful situations Why sad is not a bad feeling (and how to deal with it) How to get your partner and family involved Take a deep breath, sit back, and (mindfully) listen to this episode, and watch your stress hormones drop away… ahhhhhh!!! It’s called The Art of the Natural Home, and I’ve got her on the show this week to find out more… In this episode, we cover: How we lost these simple household skills in the first place Why slow food, chemical free living and making things from scratch is having such a resurgence in popularity right now Why it’s so important to connect with our elders and learn skills and crafts from them (rather than just Googling and YouTubing that stuff!) Tips for cleaning the home, naturally and effectively And bacon. Delicious, delicious (home made) bacon Did I mention bacon? SHY 51: Jessica Murnane – Managing Endometriosis with a Plant Based Diet
Wednesday May 03, 2017
Wednesday May 03, 2017
Meet Jessica Murnane – a passionate cook, recipe creator, podcaster… and endometriosis thriver. I came across her show “One Part Podcast” on iTunes recently, and just LOVED her inspiring, optimistic and non-judgemental style when it comes to health and the foods she chooses to eat. It takes women an average of 10 years to be diagnosed with endometriosis (Jessica went to a multitude of doctors who never picked it up), and it’s still one of the most misdiagnosed conditions out there. Jessica tells us the signs and symptoms to look out for, and shares tips on how to get formally diagnosed. If you have trouble with your periods, her advice is to seek out help – don’t just accept it as being normal. “It’s not normal for you not to function on your period.” After a couple of surgeries and trying out a range of drugs, Jessica was still in pain, suffering from severe depression, and was then offered a hysterectomy. A timely encounter with a friend resulted in her trying a plant based diet as her last ditch effort. Kicking and screaming, she gave up the meat and the cheese, and although it was a very rough time, she stuck with it. And the rewards were immense. She avoided a hysterectomy and is now 80% symptom free! Jessica is now on a mission to get us all to eat just ONE plant based meal per day, and she plans to achieve this by showing them just how delicious healthy eating can be. Her new recipe book, One Part Plant, is chock full of easy plant-based recipes using ingredients that are familiar and not too “out there.” Listen to Jess’s take on which foods cause inflammation in the body, how the right and wrong foods to eat can be different for everyone, and how to put out the inflammatory fire by figuring out your own personal triggers. “I have no judgement when it comes to how people eat because I just want them to find a way to eat that makes them feel good.” This is an episode that every woman should listen to. If you want to find out more about Jessica Murnane, check out these links: Jessica’s Website:http://www.jessicamurnane.com/ Her awesome podcast is here:http://www.jessicamurnane.com/onepartpodcast/ If you’re in Australia, you can purchase her book here. Trigger alert: We chat a lot about depression in this episode. If you are feeling low, please seek out help. Contact Beyond Blue at http://beyondblue.org.au or call Lifeline on 13 11 14 for immediate assistance. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Also, if you’d like a FREE healthy dessert eBook, chock full of yummy treat that are gluten, dairy and cane sugar free, head to julesgalloway.com now. SHY 50: Jules Galloway – Healing Chronic Fatigue
Wednesday Apr 26, 2017
Wednesday Apr 26, 2017
This week’s episode is a big one, because it’s actually my 50th episode of Shiny Healthy You, woohoooo!!! It’s also a big episode in a different way because it’s quite a personal one. And that’s because I’ll be giving you an update on what’s going on in my world. A recent (and unexpected) diagnosis of chronic fatigue has hit me for 6. It reeeeally messed with my head. There’s nothing like being told you have an illness that other people can’t even see. But after a 2-day pity party that involved wine, chocolate and Netflix, I launched into action. Find out the research I did, what I discovered, how I’m dealing with this head on, and the mindset shift that had to happen first. I’ve also radically changed my diet, so there’s a fair bit of info in this program about that too. I’ve selected a pretty tough protocol to follow, so I’ll take you through why I chose this path and how I stay motivated and on track (well, mostly!). Because sometimes even naturopaths need to pull their fingers out and do a bit of a detox. Oh – and there’s HEAPS of info in here on how I’m adjusting my lifestyle in order to give my body the space it needs to heal. So tell me – are you putting yourself first right now? What are you putting off doing that deep down, you know you have to start? Maybe it’s as simple as just going gluten free. Maybe it’s giving up sugar. Or maybe it’s the whole gut healing detox thing like I’m doing. How long are you going to put off your wellness for? Because in the end, that’s actually what you’re doing. You’re putting off feeling better. Also, if you’re looking for links to articles about my experience with pyrrole disorder, here they are: http://julesgalloway.com/healing-pyroluria/ http://julesgalloway.com/healing-pyroluria-part-2/ Happy reading! If this episode resonated with you, and you’d like to work with me, I’d love to work with you too! There are 3 awesome options to choose from. Start with my simple kickstart program called 7 Days to Gluten Free. It’s full of yummy meals, a shopping list, meal plan and heaps of tips and tricks for living a healthy, gluten free life. Then there’s my signature program, Shiny Healthy You – Fatigued to Fabulous in 12 Weeks. It’s picks up where 7 Days to GF leaves off. We continue with the amazing food, which is all gluten, dairy and cane sugar free, but we take you to the next level with meal planning, stress relief, mindfulness, a little gentle exercise, and loads of information and education to empower you. This is the program for you if you need to get back on track to find your old energetic self again. It’s also perfect if you’re suffering from adrenal fatigue. If you have underlying issues which you think are affecting your health, if eating clean’s not making enough difference and you need to figure out what’s really going on. I’m also available for one on one consultations, both in person, in Bangalow, NSW, or via Skype or Phone. I have a special interest in adrenal fatigue, pyrrole disorder, MTHFR, candida and gut health. I also offer a range of pathology testing to get to the root cause of your problems, so that we can come up with a personalised game plan to help get you back on track. You’ll find all of this over at http://julesgalloway.com. Special Offer – 1 Week Only! Purchase anything from my website before midnight on Wednesday the 3rd of May and you’ll get 30% off. That’s 30% off both programs, and off all consultations. But only until the 3rd of May, 2017. Head to julesgalloway.com now, choose your product/service, and if prompted, enter the code “PODCAST” to activate your special price. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Also, if you’d like a FREE healthy dessert eBook, chock full of yummy treat that are gluten, dairy and cane sugar free, head to julesgalloway.com now. SHY 49: Penny Murden – Coming Back from Chronic Fatigue
Wednesday Apr 19, 2017
Wednesday Apr 19, 2017
Today’s guest started out as a client and ended up as a friend. She was one of the first women to join my Shiny Healthy You program, and I had the privilege of watching her go from strength to strength. From chronic fatigue to recently conquering (for the second time) an EPIC mountain bike event in New Zealand, this is one focused woman who knows what she wants and once she gets her eyes on the prize, you know she’s going to smash through all kinds of barriers. I’ve brought her on the podcast today to show you that it CAN be done – it IS possible to get back on track after chronic fatigue. Not only that, but we’re going to pick her brain as to HOW she stayed on track. Listen, as we cover Penny’s 3 pillars to better health. Find out how she went from chronic pain and illness to not taking a single painkiller in 6 months. Listen to the compelling story of her comeback to fitness, and how she went from rock bottom to getting back to mountain biking, snowboarding, and so much more. “Pilates changed my life.” We cover the simple steps Penny had to make to get her body back on track, including going right back to basics and learning to move her body in a totally different way. As a qualified pilates instructor with an inquisitive “geek” side, she has loads of interesting insights to share. “Build slowly… and when your body says ‘enough’ – stop.” We talk about giving your body the RIGHT types of exercise when you’re still unwell, the importance of building gradually (even if you feel frustrated!), and how recovery times can vary when you’re exercising with chronic fatigue. “I went towards exercises that challenged me but nurtured me.” We also cover a condition called hypermobility and how it adds to chronic fatigue, and how hypermobile people need to care for their joints in a different way. And of course, we also talk about the importance of sleeping, and how hard it can be for driven, Type A women to slow down without feeling a truckload of guilt. “Working through that process of listening to your body and doing what it’s asking is huge and so important.” Be inspired by Penny’s story, as she talks about taking up new and challenging activities, at an age where some people are slowing down. “So what… I’m in my 40’s… Try and stop me!” Penny has loads of tips on how to recover from chronic fatigue, including how to surround yourself with like-minded people who can support you. We also chat about loving your own self, no matter where you’re at. Penny’s biggest lesson? “Learning to work with what I have, and not with what I wish I had.” If you’re facing roadblocks or frustration of any kind with your health, tune in and become motivated to live your best possible life, right here, right now, by honouring what you have and using it to build a foundation from where wonderful things can happen. Want to get in touch with Penny? You can email her at penny@pixicato.com.au And I have a wonderful program that can help you reach your goals! SHY 48: Chara Caruthers – Yoga For Everybody
Wednesday Apr 12, 2017
Wednesday Apr 12, 2017
If you’re a fan of this podcast, or if you’ve done my Shiny Healthy You 12 week program, then you will probably already know and love yoga teacher and yoga therapist Chara Caruthers. She appeared on Episode 21, where we talked about all things Ayurveda. But in this episode I’ve got her back in to chat about one of my favourite pastimes – and that’s yoga! Chara’s students are drawn to her wise, gentle, flowing and pragmatic style, which is always sprinkled with a good dose of humour, and if you haven’t “met” her yet – I just know you’re gonna love her! Chara’s also a friend of mine, so in this interview we REALLY get down to the nitty gritty, with no topic that’s off limits! Prepare for some valuable insights and lots of laughter in the process. Yoga is so much more than a series of poses. If you’re going to a typical yoga class, that’s just one aspect of yoga. Chara takes us through the deeper meaning of yoga as a system for living our best possible lives. By tuning into our own inner voice, and when we begin to detach ourselves from all our cultural conditioning, we truly start to realise what is really us, and what are just stories that we’re running in our own heads. We also talk about the concept of the yoga mat as being a mirror to truly see ourselves, and how to break through the self-criticism and comparisons that inevitably come up during a class. (Yep – it happens to ALL of us!). “What’s running your show?” Why have you turned up here? What do you want from this? Have you come here to prove something? Or hide from something? We chat about how to work through ALL the thoughts that confront us when we get there. Confused as to which type of yoga to try? We also take you through the various styles and their benefits. “If you need to throw yourself into something physical to get out of your head, or if you need to focus some of your crazy thoughts, or if you just need something to lift you up… that’s what I like about yoga… it can be a lot of different things to different people.” But quote of the day has to be this one: “Bikram is like the McDonalds of yoga.” Ummmm… what??? Yep, it’s “tell it like it is” day here on the podcast, hehe… You’ll have to tune in to find out Chara’s reasoning behind this comment! But it doesn’t end there. We also chat about the rise in glamorous “Instagram-Yogis” and what that means for the rest of us who can’t do handstands. (Hint: Yoga is for EVERYONE – not just for “the skinny girl with the leg behind her neck with the ocean and waves crashing in the background.”) “I want everyone to look at the vast expanse of yoga as a toolkit.” What do you need in your life at the moment? Do you need to be challenged? Do you need stamina? Do you need to soften your mind and body? Get ready to go deep this week. If you thought yoga was just about getting stretchy and flexible, think again… and be prepared for Chara to blow your mind! Want to connect with this amazing woman? (Of course you do, right?) You can find her here: http://www.blissbodyandsoul.com/ Or if you’re interested in her local classes (in Ballina, Northern NSW), click here: http://blissbodyandsoul.com.au/ Chara can also be found on social media. SHY 47: Fouad Kassab – Life-Changing Food
Wednesday Apr 05, 2017
Wednesday Apr 05, 2017
Meet Fouad Kassab – a man on a mission to bring us back in touch with real food. Growing up in a war-torn country, Fouad spent his formative years hunkered down in bomb shelters and living on processed food rations provided by international aid. When his health started to suffer, he was put on countless rounds of antibiotics, as there were no other alternatives available. Fast forward to 2001, and he migrated to Australia from Lebanon. He was drawn to the restaurant industry, and became one of Australia’s first food bloggers, with a website simply named “The Food Blog.” Throughout this time his health still suffered. After years of being overweight, yo-yo dieting, acne, eczema and medications, he became fed up with the mainstream medical system. He discovered a new way of living that involved paleo food and gut healing, and he’s never looked back. “Wellness is our birthright.” Fouad is now passionate about getting us back in touch with healing ingredients and letting food become our medicine. “When you go into a diet that is trying to connect you to who you are, and trying to awaken you to your true self, then this is a diet full of love and nourishment at all levels for you, and this is what you need to be well.” Come on a journey of discovery where we will cover a lot of ground, including food culture, ancestry, and what the hell we are doing with our grains. Warning: Listening to this man talk about food may induce cravings for local, organic and biodynamic produce! Life Changing Food is out now! Fouad Kassab and Jo Whitton have created a stunning new recipe book, and it’s available to purchase online. Click here to find out more. Want to connect with Fouad?
