SHY 44: My Trip to Greece – Part 3
Wednesday Mar 15, 2017
Wednesday Mar 15, 2017
Hello! And welcome to the third and final instalment in a little podcast series about my trip to Greece. As most of you will know, I headed off to Greece on the 5th of February to join up with a group organised by Involvement Volunteers International, to work in the refugee camps. There were around 30 of us – doctors, nurses, naturopaths, nutritionists, and other allied health workers, all hoping to make a difference. Our mission was to break up into smaller groups and head to various camps throughout Greece (which contained mainly Syrian and Afghani refugees) to volunteer our time and expertise wherever needed. In this episode, you will hear more from my time on an island called Chios, where boats full of refugees are arriving regularly from Turkey. In this episode I’ll take you on a virtual trip to Souda Camp, where we would serve afternoon tea every day to occupants. Tea service was a simple but super important service provided by the volunteers at CESRT. I’ll also tell you about some of the interesting characters I met there. I hope you enjoy this episode. Make sure you follow me on Facebook for more updates on how your donations were spent. We are still waiting for a final quote for air conditioning for the Children’s Centre, so I’ll keep you posted on what happens there. A huge and heartfelt thank you again to EVERYONE who donated and made this trip to Greece possible. I hope I’ve done you proud over there! It’s truly been a life changing experience for me, and I hope I’ve helped (in some small way) to make life in the camps a better place for the refugees. SHY 41: Carla Wrenn – Integrative Oncology and Cancer Care
Wednesday Feb 22, 2017
Wednesday Feb 22, 2017
This week I’m talking with Carla Wrenn – an Integrative Naturopath and Functional Medicine practitioner. She has a special interest in integrative oncology and takes on clients who are living with cancer. Yep – today we are talking about The Big C – what to do if you get it, how to assist others who have it, and where to go for information that’s accurate, reliable and up to date. In this episode we will cover: What the term “functional medicine” actually means What the first thing is that you should do if you’re diagnosed with cancer Questions you should ask your oncologist Ketogenic diets, paleo diets, vegan diets and juice cleanses How natural medicine can help improve treatment outcomes Natural ways to deal with side effects of cancer treatment Carla’s favourite herbs that she uses in practice The thing I love most about Carla is that she doesn’t make you choose between conventional medicine and natural options – instead, she finds a way to blend the two worlds so that both areas of medicine can do what they each do best while also working together. If you are living with cancer or caring for someone who is, this episode will give you simple strategies for making informed choices, and will help you to choose the best possible care with confidence. SHY 40: Sara Brooke – Reiki and tapping into our inner wisdom
Wednesday Feb 15, 2017
Wednesday Feb 15, 2017
Meet Sara Brooke – an experienced Reiki Master Teacher and Shamanic Healing Facilitator. She works with people who are seeking deeper truth and meaning to their lives. Sara began her career as a corporate “work hard, party hard” kinda gal. But she was stressed, burned out and unfulfilled. Listen to her breakdown-breakthrough moment when her world fell apart, sparking a search for a more meaningful life. “Something within me rose.” When faced with a choice between mood-altering medications to dull her pain, or finding balance through other means, she sought out a meditation class and simply began. Her search then led her to Reiki. On this week’s show, Sara will explain what Reiki is, how we can use it in our everyday lives, and how it can help women experiencing burnout. Listen to Sara chat about our increasing disconnect from nature and our own bodies, and how she believes it can lead to illness and disease. We talk about what happens to us energetically when we’re leading a busy lifestyle, trying to be everything to everyone, or giving too much of ourselves to others. Learn the warning signs that show us our bodies are out of balance (hint: it involves checking in – not with our bodies, but our emotions!). Get her perspective on: Adrenal fatigue Chronic fatigue Womb-related issues … and find out what she believes we need to do in order to heal. Sara even takes us through an exercise to experience our own energy body (it’s so simple and fun!). Come on a journey of initiation and tap into your own inner wisdom, right here, right now. SHY 37: Lauren Lacey – Bringing healthcare to refugees
Wednesday Jan 25, 2017
Wednesday Jan 25, 2017
This week I’m bringing you a special episode with Lauren Lacey from Involvement Volunteers International. Lauren is co-ordinating a team of over 30 health professionals (myself included!) who will travel to Greece in February bring healthcare to refugees. How often do you turn on the news, see the terrible atrocities happening in the world, and feel helpless? Do you share posts and videos on social media, and wish you could do something more REAL, more powerful, but you don’t know where to start? I felt that way too. So when I was offered to be a part of the solution, in a small but significant way, I jumped at the chance. Together with a team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, naturopaths and nutritionists, I will be making my way to Greece in just over a week’s time! The refugee camps are going to be confronting and overcrowded. We will be dealing with malnutrition, trauma, and a vast array of illness and disease. So what can a naturopath do in a situation like this? Plenty! We will be helping to support malnourished pregnant women, and will make sure they have the nutrition they need. We will be supporting lactating mothers to breastfeed so they don’t have to resort to expensive formulas. We will provide first aid and health checks for incoming refugees We will be taking charge of the distribution of herbs and supplements which have been kindly donated by companies and clinics. We will implementing basic exercise programs for adults and children We will be educating families around the concept of a “healthy plate” and implementing nutritional programs. Our involvement allows the doctors and nurses to get on with the job of providing much needed medical assistance, knowing that we’ve got their back. Hand in hand, we will work together in the spirit of collaboration to make a real difference. Listen as I chat with Lauren about what to expect, and how we are going to lend a hand. Please help us to re-build the lives of these refugees The Syrian people have very little access to fresh fruit and vegetables, and nutritional deficiencies are rife, so I plan to use any excess cash I have on healthy produce and supplements. If you would like to help (yay!) you can donate here: https://gogetfunding.com/help-me-buy-food-and-supplies-for-refugees-in-greece/ You will receive blow by blow updates on how your donation is spent, via blog posts, Facebook posts, and even the odd video or two. Once you donate, the best place to follow along is at http://julesgalloway.com and on Facebook at http://facebook.com/julesgallowayhealth. If you can’t afford to part with any cash right now (that’s cool – I’ve been there too!), no worries – please share my GoGet page so that others may contribute. Want to know more about Involvement Volunteers International? Check out their website here: http://www.volunteering.org.au/ (and you can donate to Lauren’s Shopping Bag campaign here too!) Jess became a naturopath at a young age. She had some challenges early on with her own hormones, and some health issues with her first baby, which sparked her interest in women’s and children’s health, and she just grew from there.
